He attended German country school in Crawford County and entered World War I military service at the age of 23. He served two years in France and Germany and was awarded the Silver Star at the battle of Chateau-Thierry. He participated in seven major campaigns in World War I and was wounded at the battle of Meuse-Argonne.
He and Beatrice Beachner were married on Nov. 23 1920 in St. Paul, Kansas. Two children were born to this union. She died in January 1929. He and Frances H. Brogan were married on Nov. 12 1934 in St. Paul. Two children were born to this union.
George was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and American Legion Post 116 in St. Paul; Disabled American Veterans in Parsons; World War I Barracks in Chanute; VFW Post 704 in Parsons. He served as Legion commander in St. Paul for several years and then was service officer.
George farmed northeast of St. Paul until 1934 when he moved into town. He moved in 1936 to a farm at South Mound and worked as a salesman for a motor firm in Parsons.
After the start of World War II, he worked as a timekeeper at KAAP. He moved to St. Paul in 1942, and then was sent to Herington as a heavy equipment inspector. Because of a heart attack, he quit work for a time and later was a part-time bulk tank driver for the George Oil Co. of St. Paul. He returned to KAAP as a timekeeper during the war in Korea and later was a bus driver for CUSD 101.
A concelebrated requiem mass for George will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Military rites will be held at graveside.
