Today is the day the Lord has chosen to receive our Mother into his loving arms. She loved Jesus and remained faithful to him; Always sharing her love and knowledge of our Lord with those around her. She was the youngest and last living of 3 sisters, JoAnn Campbell and Blondell Emily Alexander. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Tom) Blaine of Sweeny, Lana Gayle (Lester) Tipps of Cedar Lane, Texas. By grandchildren, David (Dena) McQuinn, Ellen (Tom) Bradley, Kristen Lauren Fuentes, Karadean (Donald) Crews, Lacey Kay (Tony) Crawford and 11 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother in law, Gene (Lavon) Hammond, sister in law, Agnes (LC) Hood and sister in law, Olice (Robert) Hammond. She is preceded in Death by her husband, David Q. Hammond, married 54 years, granddaughter, Sharmane Kristine Thurman, and grandson Adam Fuentes. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2010 at Sweeny Church of Christ with Nathan Burrow officiating. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m., until 8:00 p.m., at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia. She was Valedictorian of her class and continued to study and use her talents to be the author of a treasured family history book which took many years of searching and writing. She also wrote a very moving wedding song, sung by and for many weddings. She knew that education was of extreme importance as she struggled with moving from school to school during hard times as she was a child. Consequently, she was instrumental in many community involvements. She was dedicated to her church, Sweeny Church of Christ, starting upon the hill and helping make the move to the current building 55 or so years ago. She was Sunday school teacher, church librarian and church historian. Her desire to help in the establishment of the Sweeny Community Library was relentless. She was so proud of this endeavor and served on the library board here in Sweeny and also on the Brazoria County Library Board for over 30 years. She knew this was important and vital to any community. She served as President of the local Home Demonstration Club for many years; we had to endure many projects and demonstrations as Mother was dedicated to learning and trying to accomplish all. She was a member of the United Daughters of Confederacy and the Daughters of American Revolution. History and family were of the utmost importance to her. She was very patriotic and always maintained and encouraged allegiance our country. She was very knowledgeable in state and county history and would share when asked. It was always fun for us to drive around and listen to her tell of the local tales and escapades of our forefathers. She read and studied history unendingly. She loved music and was an accomplished guitar and banjo player. Family gatherings always included music, good food and very creative and competitive games, of which we looked forward to singing and playing. We will sorely miss her Turkey and Dressing – unequaled by none. Lindsay Hebert, Sammy Brooks, Mel Landreneau, Allen Anderson, David Carr, and Scott DeMarco will serve as pallbearers and her Sunday Morning Bible Class as well as nephews, Charles Alexander, Ron Alexander and J.H. Hayes will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sweeny Church of Christ Building Fund, Sweeny Christian School, or Sweeny Community Library. Mother was strong and determined to live her life as an example of goodness and strength and certainly left a legacy for all of us to desire to walk in her footsteps. She has gone on to her reward. "Never doubt in the dark what God has told you in the light. 2nd Timothy 1:12. Services are under the direction of Baker Funeral Home, 634 S. Columbia Dr. West Columbia, Texas 77486. (979) 345-3232.
