Joris (George) Brinkerhoff was the common ancestor of all the PA, Central NY and western states Brinkerhoffs. He was a fourth generation descendant of Joris Dircksen Brinckerhoff who brought the family name to the new world in 1638. He married Martina Bogart in November 1745 while still in Bergen County NJ. They had 7 children all boys: James, Roelif, Henry, Gilbert, Jacob, John and George. In the spring of 1770 he moved his family to a farm of some 500 acres near what is now Hunterstown in Adams County PA. They came along with another 100 or so other Dutch families that comprised the Conewago Colony. He was a ruling elder of the newly formed Dutch reformed church and his youngest son George served as the second pastor. All sons except George served in the Revolutionary war. The gravestone that currently stands is not original but was erected as a replacement circa 1885.
