Prairie Creek Pioneer Settled In Valley In the Year 1887
Died, Tuesday, April 2, at the home of his son, Chas. Craven of Joseph. Nathan Crazen, aged 85 years, 4 months, and 25 days. Mr. Craven had been in feeble health all winter and a few weeks ago his life was despaired of. He rallied, however, and was able to be about the house again and even made two or three trips downtown. A few days ago he became ill again and it was soon apparent that the end was not far off. The family was summoned and arrived a few hours before the end.
Nathan Craven was born in the state of North Carolina on November 7, 1837. His mother died when he was an infant and while still small he went to live with relatives in Grundy county, Missouri.
There he grew to manhood and on April 14, 1859, was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Kilborn. To this union, nine children were born, two of whom died in infancy.
In about 1887 the family came to Wallowa county where they settled on Prairie creek. There they lived until 1910 when they moved to Joseph where Mrs. Craven died during the winter. Mr. Craven died during the winter. Mr. Craven has been a resident of Joseph most of the time since, having spent some time on the Imnaha with his daughter, Mrs. Nick Musty.
The Craven family is among the pioneer families of Wallowa county and is highly respected by all who know them. Mr. Graven has been a Mason for many years, his children being unable to remember a time when he was not a member of that ancient institution. Funeral services are to be conducted by the Masonic lodge of Joseph of which he has been a member for many years.
There are left to mourn his loss three children: Mrs. Cora Musty of Imnaha, Charles and Edd Craven of Joseph, also thirteen grandchildren and a host of friends.
Interment will be made in Prairie creek cemetery where rest his wife and three daughters.
Enterprise Record Chieftain, Enterprise, OR Thursday, April 5, 1923.
