Vera M. McGee Certain

Vera M. McGee Certain, 92, of West Terre Haute, passed away peacefully in her residence Friday afternoon, March 26, 2010. She retired from Great Scott Grocery Store after many years of service. She was born Feb., 7, 1918, in Clark County, Ill., to John McGee and Rose Belle Liffick McGee.

She married James V. Certain Sr. Together they operated their grain and livestock farm for many years in western Vigo County, raising all forms of livestock including swine, chickens, turkeys, milking shorthorn cattle and later shorthorn beef cattle. They also enjoyed training and raising horses and ponies. Jim preceded her in death in 1957.

Survivors include a son, Rex S, Certain and a daughter, Marsha K. Certain, both of West Terre Haute; a grandson, Clay Certain; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James V. Certain Jr., and William O. Certain; a grandson, James Douglas Certain; four sisters, Bess Barnhart, Nell Pickens, Ruby Kesler, and Margery Danziger; and five brothers, Owen, Edgar, Frank, John Jr., and Crews McGee.

She was a member of the Vigo County Home Extension Club for nearly 60 years, a member of Vigo County Farm Bureau since 1942, of which she served on the board of directors, and she volunteered for the Vigo County Spay and Neuter League. She also was a member of the former Sunset Saddle Club, was an avid animal lover, and enjoyed working in her flower gardens.
There will be visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute. Private family graveside services will be Wednesday at Dunlap Cemetery.
