A native of Quincy, he had lived in Tallahassee since 1960. He was actively involved in coaching youth baseball for many years and he also enjoyed officiating high school and college football and basketball for 25 years. He was a member of Hayden Road Assembly of God Church in Tallahassee and was formerly a member of First Assembly of God Church in Quincy. Other survivors include a son, Sterling R. Abney (and wife Carey) of Tallahassee; two daughters, Lisa Abney and Tammy Agee (and husband Larry), both of Tallahassee; a sister, Jennie Batts of Monticello; a brother, James Abney of Abbeville, Ala.; three grandchildren, Ashley, Christina and Zachary; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Wilda Abney and a brother, Melvin.
