DEERWOOD -- Berton F. Manske, 84, Deerwood, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born July 21, 1917, in Finlayson to Frederick Anthony and Julia Mary Mae (Dosch) Manske. When he was 9 the family moved to the Crosby area. He worked in the mines for several years and in December of 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in Fairbanks, Alaska, and was discharged in December of 1945. In 1946 he returned to the Fairbanks area to work as a carpenter until he retired in 1976. He then returned to the Crosby area. He was a member of the Myrin James American Legion Post No. 443 in Ironton and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby.

Survivors include two brothers, Bob Manske, Little Falls, and Don Manske, St. Albans, Vt.; and a sister, Rosemary Caven, Lake Nebaganom, Wis.

His parents; three brothers, Charles Manske, Roy Manske and Fred Manske; and four sisters, Mary Manske, Florence Fuller, Bernadette Taylor and Frances Lovsted, died earlier.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby with Father Howard Eisel officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby with military rites provided by the Myron James American Legion Post No. 443 in Ironton.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
