In Vernon County, Missouri, on June 3, 1877 he married Sophia Ann Murray, the daughter of Elijah Murray and Eliza Matilda Ellis; who preceded him in death on April 25, 1897. To this marriage, eight children were born.
The survivors are Frank Andrew Hunter of Los Angeles, California and Lettie Mae Shumaker of Nevada, Missouri. Preceding him in death is his daughters Cora Bell Hunter, Mamie Dennis, Prudy Hunter and Flora Hunter. Also preceding him in death are his sons Irvin M. Hunter and John Watson Hunter.
