The lineage of the Stokes Family is traced to staunch Scotch-Irish origin, with a strain of English, and the American progenitors settled in the southern part of the United States in the colonial epoch.

William Benson Stokes was born 4 June 1804, in La
Grange, Georgia and died 10 July 1864 in Crockett, Texas.
He married Harriet Bacon on 24 December 1829. They came to Houston County in the 1850's. The genealogical library in Austin shows he paid taxes in 1854. He located to Crockett, where he practiced his profession as a member of the Crockett Bar and was recognized in his day as a leading lawyer. He was noted for his physical energy and used no conveyance when coming into town, but chose to make the journey on foot. He and his wife are buried in Glenwood Cemetery.

3. Mary J. Stokes Atmar (I believe her to be a daughter, although it is not written).
4. William Bacon Stokes ( I believe him to be a son although it is not written).
