Candidate in 1840 for the Whig nomination for vice president as running mate with William Henry Harrison. He broke the tied vote by voting for John Tyler, who became president when Harrison died of pneumonia a month after his inauguration. President of the Virginia Secession convention; voted against secession but changed his vote to join the majority and make the decision unanimous.

John Janney was the son of Elisha Janney (1761-1827) and Mary Gibson (1777-1846). John married Alcinda Marmaduke January 1826 in Virginia.
