Lt. Col. Philip Barton Porter, 79, of Tampa, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 in Tampa, Fla. Funeral services were held in Tampa, Fla. He was a son of the late Stephen Lawson and Agnes Garber Porter of Cripple Creek (Virginia). He was a former resident of Rural Retreat, (Virginia), and was instrumental in the development of Rural Retreat Lake. At the beginning of World War II, he left Cripple Creek, and served 28 years in the U.S. Air Force. He flew 120 combat missions in the South Pacific and was the leading ace in night kills of Japanese Zeros. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Lawson Porter; two brothers, Stephen L. Porter Jr. and Daniel Garrett Porter; and two sisters, Daphne Rhudy and Dolly Meekins. Survivors include his wife, Linda Porter of Tampa, Fla.; and two sons and a daughter-in-law, Philip B.Jr. and Natalie Miller Porter and Christopher Porter; one daughter, Tracey Porter; four grandchildren; one brother, Robert Port of Cripple Creek; and two sisters, Margaret Porter Carpenter of Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville, and Agnes Porter Bolcer of Wytheville. A funeral home in Tampa, Fla., was in charge of the arrangements.
