McDougall's death, circa 1870s, is chronicled in the Annals of Wyoming, 1927, by Howard Michael, McDougall's neighbor, who lived about 15 miles from the Fort near "The Blacksmith Shop."

Howard and McDougall were wood cutters. Out working one day, Michael was returning to camp with a large load, so large that he had left his rifle behind. He saw riders come up the trail, head a gun crack, and saw McDougall fall dead.

The attackers were Indians, who scalped McDougall, taking his rifle and shells, riding past Michael, who had hidden. Michael ran back for his gun and on to another camp for help. The group went back for McDougall's body, which they sent to the Fort for burial.
