Spencer Wright was the son of Moses Wright and Elizabeth Prewit (Pruitt). He was born on 31 May 1829, in the area of Rutherford County, NC that later became Cleveland County. He married Elizabeth Prewit (Pruitt) on 2 October 1851 in Marion County, Arkansas. His wife, Elizabeth, was his first cousin; the niece of his mother. He enlisted on 1 March 1862 in the Confederate 16th Texas Calvary. Spencer Wright was the first cousin of John and William Prewit (Pruitt), who died in the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah.
