Last Tuesday morning Jacob Beaver committed suicide in Luray by throwing himself on the track almost directly under a moving freight engine. The immediate scene of the tragedy was near the passenger depot.

Mr. Beaver lived near Kimball, and had come to Luray on the morning of his death with a load of lumber, which he had unloaded at the planing mill. On returning from the mill he left the team in charge of a boy who had accompanied him to town.

The deceased was seen by several persons hurrying from Main Street in the direction of the train; as he was seen by two trainmen and Mr. George W. Judd run hurriedly up the embankment and deliberately throw himself across the track almost directly under the ponderous locomotive. Two wheels passed over his body just above the hips, producing instant death.

In the absence of the coroner, (Dr. Hudson) John S. Grayson, Esq., Magistrate, summoned a jury and held an inquest. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that deceased committed suicide.

Mr. Beaver had been in ill health for some time, and had often threatened and attempted self-destruction. It is believed that he would have ended his life some time ago had not his wife and friends kept so close a watch upon him. He was 35 years old.
