From Holland St. John - "David was born in September 7, 1798 (one source suggests 1797) in Kentucky. As a youth, he moved with his family to Knox County (later called Posey County), Indiana in 1807 when he was nine or ten years old. His father was the Reverend Samuel Jones and his mother was Elizabeth (Middleton) Jones. The family was one of the first pioneers to migrate to Posey County when Indiana was a territory. It is quite possible that the family was joined by various members of the Duckworth and Givens families, as they were intermarried. Early church records list numerous Duckworths, Givens and Joneses as members of the Bethel Baptist Church of which his father was the minister. David is listed as Number 22. Sometime around 1817 David married Margaret R. Duckworth, the daughter of John and Mary (Hill) Duckworth. She was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1797 (one source mentions 1799). She died in Posey County in 1874. David established a farm in Black Township and he and Margaret raised ten children: Elizabeth, Mary ("Polly"), Emily, John D., Lydia, Matilda D., William W., Robert Duckworth (my grandfather), Ezekiel and Henry L. The U S Census of 1820 lists David living in Black Township, Posey County and there were four others living with him, but no names were included. David may have moved his family across the Wabash River into Illinois for a short period. His son John D. is listed in three census reports as having been born in Illinois. By 1826 he bought land in Black Township with his brother Wilson and Robert Duckworth as witnesses. The family is listed in census reports as living in Posey County in 1830 and 1840. The U S Census of 1850 records the family as still living in Black Township and David's occupation as a farmer. Estimated value of his real estate was given as $1,100. Living at home was David (53), Margaret (53), Matilda (20), Robert Duckworth (14), Ezekiel (12) and Henry (9). Also living with the family was David Lytle, a grandson (17) who was helping out on the farm as a laborer. Just before the census was taken, in August of that year their eighteen year old son William died of fever. By 1860 David and Margaret were still on the family farm and the only child living at home was their son Henry (19). Living on a farm next door was their daughter Emily and her husband William Cash. In 1870 David and "Peggy R." were living alone on the farm. Their son John D. Jones lived next door. The will of David Jones was filed on May 17, 1871 in Posey County. The will was reaffirmed on August 22, 1873. David passed away on May 17, 1873. Family tradition has both David and Elizabeth interred in the area of their farm which was later identified as the "David Jones Cemetery." This request was stated in his will. The farm was located a few miles north of the town of Mount Vernon where a number of his children also established farms."
