Benjamin D Cloud was the son of Henry Pierre and Stretched the Earth. He was born in 1891 at Fort Shaw, Montana, but his parents soon returned to Standing Rock Indian Reservation, North Dakota, where they both were enrolled. They named their son Tehannajinyanpi (Surrounded). Pierre died in 1896 and his widow married Adam Dog Cloud. After her second husband’s death, Stretched the Earth and her son Surrounded moved to a ranch operated by Henry’s older brother, Baptiste Pierre. Pierre adopted Surrounded at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Fort Yates, ND and christened him as Alfred Benedict Dog Cloud. Dog Cloud attended boarding school at Carlisle Indian School, served for 2 1/2 years during WWI under the name of 2nd Lt. Benjamin D. Cloud, then married and moved to Minneapolis where he worked as a chiropractor. He and his wife Doris had one child, Madonna Irene Cloud. Benjamin D. Cloud died at the National Military Home and was buried at the Dayton National Cemetery.
