Evelyn was 93 when she passed away peacefully on Wednesday at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison, Following a long struggle with the devastating effects of dementia.
Born to Theodore and Sena (Colden) Halverson the eighth child out of nine, having five sisters and three brothers.
Evelyn graduated from the Blanchardville High School in 1934. She was confirmed at Adams Lutheran Church in 1932. After high school, Evelyn eventually moved to Madison where she met Fred Rice, son of Elmer and Kathryn Rice. They were united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1942.
Evelyn was a stay-at-home mother until 1962, when she went to work as a sales clerk at Gimbels in Hilldale Shopping Center in Madison. Evelyn was a devout Lutheran and kept her children in the faith, making sure each was confirmed. Evelyn was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church until the church moved to the Eastside. She then became a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she has been a devoted member. Evelyn served her church for many years as a volunteer for Lutheran Homes and Services, and Bethesda House of Thrift. Evelyn was also a life member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, participating in many charitable events.
Evelyn is survived by her three sons, eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, along with many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; six siblings; and grandson, Jeffery (Tom). Funeral Services were held on Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church ELS, Madison, WI.
