On June 11, 1863, another member of the 26th Michigan was accidently shot. Ambsiah (Ambrosial) Tompkins (Tomkins) of Newaygo had enlisted at Brooks into Co. C. of the 26th Michigan on August 2, 1862, at the age of 27 and was accidently shot at Suffolk, Virginia on June 1, or 11. His brother or cousin, Daniel Tompkins of Newaygo, served in the 21st Michigan. (Cpl. Myron Holmes of Co. D. had written about an old musket that had not been used in a long time, "went off and through the chest of a soldier." Periodically, there were similar accidents in the 26th Michigan).
