He left his parents' home after the 1880 census was enumerated and later ended up in South Dakota. Years later, he came back to Wisconsin and settled in Douglas County.

FYI: His name is shown as F. G. Messerschmidt on the marriage license and also on some census reports. I don't know what the initial G is for. The 1900 census shows his name as Fred W. Bennett. For what ever reason, he used the name of Fred Bennett while living in SD and then went back to using the Messerschmidt name when he moved back to Wisconsin.
