Joseph originally joined the 62nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1862 as Corporal of Company D for a 3 year-service. He was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 12, 1863. He was mustered out on June 16, 1865.
Joseph married Miss Mary A. Weaver on November 29, 1863 during his 30 day furlough.
