Was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, son of Isaac Jacob Chef d'Hotel and Delia Bruijnier. Arrived in New York on 2 September 1893 on the "S.S. Werkendam". He shortened and changed his last name to "Cheff" and anglicized and switched his first and middle names. He served the Grace Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1903-1905. Petitioned the District Court of West Michigan on 5 May 1908 to become a citizen of the United States.
