He shortened and changed his last name to "Cheff" and anglicized and switched his first and middle names. He served the Grace Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1903-1905. Petitioned the District Court of West Michigan on 5 May 1908 to become a citizen of the United States.
