Mrs H D Pearce, Pioneer of Runnels County, Dies at WInters. Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Pearce, 87, one of Runnels County earliest pioneer citizens, died Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs R H MacFarland of Winters. Mrs Pearce had been in failing health for several months and in critical health for more than a week. Decendant and her husband, H D Pearce, moved to West Texas in the 1870's. They came to Runnels County from Paint Rock about 1880 and he was instrumental in the organization of this county and was the first postmater at Runnels, then the county seat. A daughter, Mrs W L Hayley of Norton, was the first white child born in the county. In 1886, the family moved to Ballinger and built the first hotel here. For many years after the founding of Ballinger, the Pearce Hotelwas a landmark. Mr Pearce became the 2nd postmaster here and for many years was active in the Confederate Veterns' organizations for this section until 1911 when the family moved to Robert Lee to make home. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs Hayley of Norton, Mrs MacFarland of Winters, Mrs W B Hamilton and Mrs Frederick Henry of Montell and one son, H H Pearce of Dallas. Other survivors include 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
