Horrible, Horrible--Shoots His Girlfriend and then Kills Himself Last Saturday morning, Hardy Sheffield, son of Lewis Sheffield, who lived in neighborhood of Almira, armed himself with a double barrel shotgun and a six shooter and went to the home of Josh Kirkland, arriving before breakfast. He appeared in bad humor, but as he was supposed to be on good terms with the family, no one suspected his intentions. It seems that he had been for some time paying attention to Mr. Kirkland's daughter, a nice amiable young lady and had written her several letters, but had become jealous of the attention of another young man, which crazed him. After taking breakfast with the family and Mr. Kirkland had gone to the Mill, young Sheffield asked the young lady to get his letters. She went in a room and brought them out and handed them to him, he then told her he was going to kill her, upon which, she started to run into the house. Just as she reached the door, Sheffield shot her in the back with a full load of buck shot. He then shot himself with the other barrel, failing to kill himself, he drew his six shooter and put a ball through his head, producing almost instant death. The young lady died about an hour later without speaking. We dislike to comment upon such fearful tragedies; we don't believe that a well raised person can be guilty of such deeds while in a sane condition, hence what ever may have been the cause or causes that brought it about, it is evident that the young man was out of balance. We sincerely sympathize with the afflicted friends.
