His father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in Scotland.

Civil War veteran entered from Kentucky.
Pay stub, 12 September 1862 shows him at Talladega, Alabama.

James Brooks came to Texas in 1875 from Alabama.

He married Martha Jane Frasier who came to Texas with her parents from Mobile, Alabama. The couple married in 1878.

The couple moved to Milam County and lived in Maysfield where they farmed. There were 15 children born to this union, six dying at childbirth.

Typhoid fever broke out in the Mayfield community in 1900. The Brooks family had typhoid and the disease killed many of the family including Martha Brooks and three of her children. After the death's of his family, James Books moved to Burleson County. His youngest son, Jessie Alexander Brooks went to live with his wife's sister, Ophelia Frasier Kerrigan.

James Brooks lived in Burleson County until his death as a farmer and rancher.
