William Jesse Flowers was born Apr 27, 1862 in Ashville, Buncombe Co., NC, the second of three sons born to Christopher Calvin Flowers and Elizabeth Condrey. He married Mary H. L. Massey Nov 20 1887 in Gaston Co., NC. Together they had seven children, 5 daughters and 1 son, and one child that did not survive infancy. Jesse was a carpenter most of his life, and served as justice of the peace for several years while living in Bryan Co., OK.
Jesse's two brothers had already died by the time his father died in 1896, so his mother moved in with Jesse and his family. When Jesse's wife Mary died in 1909, Jesse and his 71 year old mother raised the six children. They were very poor and this must have been very hard. The children ranged in age from 17 months old to almost 16 years of age.
Jesse died Jan 8, 1949 in Durant, Byran Co., OK. His body was moved to Bloomfield Cemetery (later the name changed to Bloomfield Jones Cemetery) in Cooke Co., TX, where his mother and wife are buried.
Jesse is my great grandfather.
