Friedrich and Martha Stoll immigrated to this county from Germany in 1850. The came from Brockhorst, Holstein Germany aboard the Marie Fredericke, landing in Quebec in April of 1850. Friedrich wanted land with a river, so he could build a dam and gristmill. He bought the homestead property, sight unseen, in September of 1850. He found it had only a small creek running through it and didn't provide enough water for the dam and mill.
