Dead Man Had Been in Poor Health
Since Attack of "Flu."—Came to
This County 35 Years Ago.
John A. Johnson, a familiar character
in and about Algona for the last
35 years, was found dead in a small
workshop at his home Monday afternoon
at 1:30 o'clock. Victor Johnson,
a neighbor, discovered the body.
Mr. Johnson lived on the North
Iowa Pike a mile and a half northeast
of town, across the road south
from the Victor Johnson place. He
and his wife lived alone.
Monday morning Mr. Johnson left
the house, and when he did not return
at noon his wife notified Victor
Johnson, who made a search of the
outbuildings and found John lying
dead in the workshop.
No Inquest Held.
Marshal Newville was notified, and
took with him Coroner Laird and
Doctor Cretzmeyer, who made an
investigation. It was decided that
it would not be necessary to hold an
inquest. Doctor Cretzmeyer was of the
opinion that death might have been caused
by a stroke of apoplexy. A small
bottle bearing a strychnine label was
found in the building, but it may have
been there for some time, and the
contents may have been used for the
extermination of rats or some like
purpose.
Early in the winter Mr. Johnson
had the "flu," and never regained his
strength and old-time vigor. Neighbors
who came in contact with him
daily noticed that he was in failing
health, and he complained frequently
of a severe pain in the back of his
head.
Came Here in 1888.
Mr. Johnson was a native of
Sweden. He was born March 29,
1858, and at the time of his death
was" in his 65th year. He came to
America when he was a young man
twenty years old, and secured employment
in Chicago, working at his
trade as a tailor. He was married
there to Miss Alma Johnson. After a
few years in Chicago they moved to
St. Paul, where they resided for a
time. They came to Algona thirtyfive
years ago. For a number of years
Mr. Johnson was employed in the
tailor shop of Madsori & Hanson. He
"was a good workman, and a quiet
and unassuming gentleman.
The funeral was held yesterday af-
Jernoon at 2:30 at the Methodist
church, the services being conducted
by the Rev. Mr. Todd. The remains
were interred in (Riverview cemetery.
There are four living children:
Mrs. Christ Omholt, Great Falls, Montana.;
Mrs. William Rath, Lone Rock;
and Walter and Myrtle, both of Algona.
