Willis George Laplante, 71, of Crookston died late Sunday evening, May 7, 2000 at Riverview Hospital.

Willis was born in Crookston on June 12, 1928, the son of Frank and Georgine (Bilden) LaPlante. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended Cathedral Elementary School in Crookston. Willis later attended Fisher High School and then the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston.

He married Delores C. Gruhot at the St. Rose Of Lima Catholic Church in Argyle on October 9, 1950. The couple farmed in Lowell and Crookston Townships of Polk County for many years. Willis was also employed at the American Crystal Sugar Company in Crookston and later worked as a mechanic and shop foreman for the Massey Ferguson Company. He entered the U.S. Navy in January of 1952. Willis served aboard the USS Don Homme Richard in the Pacific, the USS Oriskinny our of Yakaichi, Japan, and the USS Philippine Sea based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Willis received the Korean Service Ribbon, the United Nations Medal and the National Defense Service Ribbon before his discharge in 1954. He returned home to his family and resumed farming.

Willis was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed working in his flower and vegetable gardens.

He was a life long member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and had served as Eucharistic Minister. He was a life member of Crookston VFW Post #1902 and the National Rifle Association. He belonged to Crookston American Leagion Post #20 and Crookston Eagles Aerie #873.

He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Delores; two sons Michael LaPlante, Fisher and Thomas LaPlante, Crookston; five grandchildren, Tom "TJ", Chad, Eric, and Wade LaPlante, and Rachel Kuchan and her husband Brock; a brother and sister in law Francis and Catherine LaPlante, Mentor; two sisters and a brother in law, Doris and Harvey Coauette and Elizabeth "Bette" Kuznia, all of Crookston; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Virgil and Robert LaPlante.
