Daniel Hazelton Tevis was a physician and a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Tevis Family, Penobscot Press, 2003, by Mary M. Bell, professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University, page 18-19:

Daniel Haselton was the first child of Robert and Elizabeth (Devoss) Tevis and was born on 7 June 1797 in Bracken County, Kentucky. He spent his boyhood on his father's farm with his nine brothers and one sister. Daniel became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, serving as a circuit rider in his early years. He later studied medicine and was a practicing physician in a rural area where he was also a part-time farmer.

Daniel was married to Phebe Scott on 13 February 1821 in Clermont County, Ohio. Born on 22 August 1798 to Edward Scott and an unknown mother, Phebe was a native of North Carolina. She went with her parents to Clermont County in Ohio before the age of seven. All but Milton of the surviving children of Robert and Elizabeth left Kentucky for Indiana in the 1830's. Daniel and Phebe settled in rural Rush County near Moscow in 1832 where they reared a family of eight daughters and four sons.

Daniel's death came on 5 June 1858 in Rush County where he was buried in Mt. Gherizim Cemetery. Phebe died on 22 March 1862 in Rush County and was buried with Daniel. 3 They share a tombstone west of Moscow in the small rural cemetery which is no longer maintained.

Although Daniel had no will ten of his eleven living children were named in the probate records with the three youngest listed as minors. The seven adult children each received an inheritance of $5.20 after the death of their mother. It is unknown why Daniel M. was not listed. Perhaps, he received financial assistance prior to moving to Illinois in the late 1850's. Only circumstantial evidence links Daniel M. to this family. He was born in Kentucky, married in Rush County, Indiana, lived adjacent to Daniel H. in 1850, and his date of birth dovetails between Sarah's and Elizabeth's. He must be the fourth son of Daniel and Phebe.

The first seven children in this family were born in Bracken County, Kentucky with the last five born after the move to Rush County, Indiana.
