The Indiana 1883 marriage record to Anna Whitten contains his parents' names: Daniel & Phoebe. The following death info was found through the Shelby County Library;

The Daily Republican, June 7, 1888.----(Indianapolis-) Dr. Joel Tevis, who has been confined to the city hospital for some time, died yesterday.

He was a brother of Rev. John Tevis, of this city.
