Henry Clay DeWees, 75, died at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette. He had been in ill health for the past three years and critically ill the last week.

Born in Jasper county, he had spent his entire life in Jasper and Newton counties as a farmer. He retired in 1942. He was married in 1907 to Effie Martin and following her death in 1918, he married Mrs. Bessie McElfersh Rush.

Surviving besides the widow are three sons, Gaylord, Donald and Marvin of Rensselaer; three daughters, Mrs. Wilda Dunn of Rensselaer, Mrs. Leona Dadlan of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mrs. Gaskell Ferguson of Antioch, Calif. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
