Son of Rev. Stephen and Sarah (Mosher) Chapin. Born in Yarmouth, Maine 10 Jan 1820 and came to DC at the age of 6, when his father accepted the presidency of the Columbian University. Erastus graduated from Columbian when he was only 16 and went to Georgia to teach school. Returned to Columbian and received his degree in medicine and practiced in Georgia and Washington. Became a contractor and constructed some of the first railroad lines in Georgia and buildings in Washington. During the civil was he was proprietor of livery stable on G Street. In the early fifties Dr. Chapin was deputy US marshal of the District of Columbia and superintendent of streets in Washington.

Dr. Chapin was married in 1854 but no children. He was a member of the Oldest Inhabitants' Association and of the First Baptist Church of Washington for over 50 years.
