Son of Stephen and Rachel (Rawson) Chapin. Graduated from Harvard in 1804. Pastor at Hillsborough, NH (1805-1808) then at Mt. Vernon, NH. Ordained minister of the Baptist Church at N. Yarmouth, Maine (1819 -1822). Professor of theology at Waterville College (1822-1828). President of Columbia College (later George Washington University) from 1828 to 1841.

Married 21 Dec 1809 at Hollis, NH to Sarah Mosher. Eight known children.
