Mrs. Malissa Laird, 76 years of age, the widow of Isaac Laird, and a resident of Atchison for twelve years, died at 1 o’clock this afternoon after a brief illness. Last week, Mrs. Laird visited her daughter, Mrs. Sam Page, in Nortonville. She had been in failing health, but members of the family did not consider her condition alarming until Sunday, since when she had grown steadily worse. At 2 o’clock this morning, she fell into a sleep from which she never awakened. Until a year ago, Mrs. Laird lived in her own home on South Seventh Street. She sold her home, since when she lived with her son, Richard Laird, at 925 Laramie Street, where she died. Mrs. Laird’s husband died twenty-three years ago. They were the parents of twelve children, all of whom survive except the eldest son, Thomas Laird. He was killed in a railroad wreck in Topeka about nine years ago, when seventeen men lost their lives. The surviving children, besides those mentioned are: Mrs. J.G. Bigenwalt, Atchison; John and Robert Laird, Valley Falls; H.O. Laird and Mrs. Sam Shaw, Nortonville; Mrs. Sylvia Lane, Rawlins, WY; Mrs. Amanda Cossell, Charlestown, IL; Charles Laird, Topeka; and Mrs. E. R. McKee, Effingham. With the except of Mrs. Lane and Mrs. Cossell, Mrs. Laird’s children were with her at the last, and the two daughters will be here for the funeral. Until they arrive, arrangements for the funeral cannot be made. The interment will be in the cemetery at Cummings, where Mr. Laird is buried.
