Deputy Altman was struck and killed by a vehicle while manning a roadblock at the intersection of US 31 and US 10. The vehicle that struck him was fleeing from other units.

Deputy Altman had only served with the agency for 3 months. He was survived by his wife and three children.

He was a 1952 graduate of Cadillac High School, and an Army veteran.
His wife's name was Joan Carol Miller (she later remarried, and is still living in Cadillac) Besides his wife, he was survived by his mother; his wife, Joan, and their 3 children; Scott Altman, Martin Altman and Jacqueline Altman. Also surviving were 3 sisters; Betty (Bob) Brinks, Barbara (Leonard) Marcusse and Beverly, as well as one brother, Paul.
