Edward Sanchez: Math Mentor, Sanchez, Dies

The former Brandon High teacher inspired many to become teachers.

BRANDON - He had a way of taking a complex mathematical equation and making it interesting and fun.

That's one of the things Belinda Kramer will remember about her uncle, Robert Edward Sanchez of Brandon, who died July 28 at the age of 82.

She said the retired Brandon High School math department chairman's enthusiasm for teaching inspired her and many others to become teachers.

"He was an energetic teacher who believed learning should be fun," Kramer said. "My uncle was a really endearing guy who left a mark on many of his students. One that I ran into at the funeral happens to be the department head of the math department at Armwood High School, where I teach."

Kramer said Sanchez recruited that department head into teaching many years ago and continued to mentor her.

After serving in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War, Sanchez received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the University of Tampa and his master's degree from the University of Florida.

He later was awarded a fellowship to attend the University of South Carolina to learn modern mathematics, which he introduced into Hillsborough County's public school curriculum.

Sanchez began his teaching career at the junior high level and retired as the head of Brandon High's math department after teaching in Hillsborough County for more than 30 years.

A longtime member of the Church of God, he and his wife, Evelyn, were married for 60 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Diane Petteway, Sandra LaCost and Krystal Bottom; a brother, Joe Sanchez; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 2 at Brandon Church of God in Brandon, and interment took place at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Contributions may be made in his memory to Brandon Church of God or Gideons International, 1618 S. 51st St., Tampa, FL 33619.
