Nellie was the 5th & last child of Andrew Jackson Mitchell and Janie Fairfax (Mitchell) Young. Her father was a farmer & the mother a homemaker. Nellie was only 9 months old when her father died in June 1924. The mother couldn't afford to raise 5 young children by herself so Nellie, along with her siblings, were put in an orphanage the rest of their childhood.
Nellie had three older brothers and one sister. Her brothers were Albert, Ray and Leonard. Her sister was Gladys. Albert, Gladys and she stayed in the orphanage until adulthood. Ray ran away from it at the age of 12. Leonard drown there as a result of a practical joke gone wrong. All 5 children had it rough during their stay.
Nellie married Norman Mudd & started a family. They had 2 children. She served in the U.S. Army along with her husband.
