Jack Staley Hammond, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, May 1, 1997. He was retired from the General Electric Plant, Salem, and also from the U.S. Navy with 30 years of service. Mr. Hammond served his country in both World War II and in the Korean Conflict. A native of Big Stone Gap, he was preceded in death by his parents, A. P. and Mida Hammond. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Bertha Hammond; a daughter, Linda Hammond; a son, Robert Hammond, both of Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Wayne Withers, Collinsville; a brother and sister-in-law, A. P. and Nina Hammond, Roanoke; a sister, Anne Hammond, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 1997, from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Frank Feather will officiate. Interment services, with full military honors by the U. S. Navy, will be in Arlington National Cemetery 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 1997. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel.
