While on picket duty during the Siege of Petersburg, Earl Halbert of the 5th Michigan was wounded and died in a field hospital shortly after on September 16, 1864. Originally buried one-half mile east of the Avery House near the "grove" at the Fair Grounds hospital, Earl's body was reinterred in Poplar Grove National Cemetery: Grave 1209. G.A.R. Post # 108 of Grand Ledge was named in his honor. In 1896 they would place a stone monument that features an 1864 Civil War cannon. It reads, "On flames eternal camping ground." In his later years, Fayette H. Moore of the 26th Michigan would attend memorial events at this Soldier's Monument
