Mr. Carlton, age 82, of Gillette, Wyoming died on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital due to heart failure.
Jim was born in Gillette, Wyoming the son of James and Florence (Bell) Carlton on September 26, 1927.
The family lived in a log cabin on the Bert Norfolk ranch 22 miles north of Gillette. They seldom made it to town.
When Jim was ready for school he was sent to Gillette to stay with relatives. Never being away from home, he was homesick and knew nothing of "city" life. He was taken out of school until his younger sister was ready to start school.
The family then moved to town. He grew up on horses and as a child made several trips with his father with cattle herds from the railroad in Gillette to Montana.
After finishing the 9th grade in Gillette, at age 14 he left home and worked on ranches around the county. Jim broke a lot of horses to ride.
In October of 1944, at the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy. Jim served on the USS Shangri-la, the largest air craft carrier in the Navy. He was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. Jim was discharged on May 17, 1946.
On September 27, 1947, he married Bernice Cooper, a lifetime friend. They spent their lives together ranching, raising horses and breaking horses. He worked on various ranches and his wife worked in offices to supplement their ranching income. Jim also worked on seismograph crews, drove truck and tended bar.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #42 from 1946, to the time of his death.
Jim was one of the last of the old time cowboys and was always accompanied by his dog BJ. He loved to hunt deer and antelope around home, he enjoyed his yearly elk hunting trips, but his passion was his horses.
Jim was still raising paints and quarter horses till the time of his death.

Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years; sister, Bunky Morrison of Gilbert, Arizona; brother, Don Carlton of West Jordan, Utah; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, 2 sisters: Evelyn and Ladeena and 2 brothers: Ted and an infant who died at birth.

Memorials are suggested to the Gillette College Rodeo Team in Jim's name. Memorials and condolences may be sent in care of Gillette Memorial Chapel, 210 W. 5th Street, Gillette, Wyoming 82716 or condolences via the internet at www.gillettememorialchapel.com.
