My Grandmother Eda Boyd ( I called her Grandma Boom as a kid instead of Boyd) was a strong and no-nonsense woman who stressed hard work, education and discipline. She also had a tender and loving side that we grand kids especially appreciated. Her snicker-doodle cookies were very good and I have dozens of hand written letters she sent me until she was much older and her memory failed.
Grandma was a Navy Wave and a WWII vet, she met my grandfather in Pensacola FLA during the war.
After my Grandfathers accidental death as a Navy Commander and test pilot in 1957, she successfully raised my mother and her 3 siblings on her own, and in later life put herself through college on the GI bill.
Her husband Raymond (1942), son Raymond Jr. (1973) and grandson, Samuel (2005), are all graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy. All three of her daughters are also college educated and enjoy successful careers.
She came from a very large Idaho family - I have heard tales of annual trips to Yellowstone NP in her youth.
I remember her yodeling and telling us about her Swiss heritage - my mother took her to Switzerland many years later.
She loved her '68 Chrysler. It was a two door Newport "Spring Edition" - green with woody applique sides - it was a sight to behold.
