Harry Patterson Of Dodson Dies Late Thursday
Harry Patterson of Dodson, one of the men who helped make possible rural electricity for Collingsworth County, and a farm leader for more than 20 years, died in St. Joseph's Hospital Thursday night, November 15, at 10:45 pm. He had been seriously ill for two weeks, after suffering a heart attack. He was 56 years of age.
Mr Patterson had lived near Dodson for 22 years, farming throughout that time. Few men of the area had given more generously of their time or worked more untiringly for the progress of their community. Nor were his efforts confined to one field, for he worked equally for farm, civic and church enterprises.
One of the group who helped to found the Greenbelt Rural Electric Cooperative, which extends over five counties, he was named its president September 1, 1938, and continued to hold that office until the time of his death. He was formerly Sunday School superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene at Dodson. He was a former officer of the Farmer's Coop Gin at Dodson and headed the annual singing convention at that town.
Friendly and neighborly by nature, throughout his entire life he enjoyed the work he did for his friends and community. His loyalty to those about him drew the trust and admiration of those who were in contact with him.
Mr. Patterson was born at Batesville, Ark., on July 23, 1889. He grew to manhood there. He was married to Miss Effie Atchison in 1909, at Batesville, and they continued to make their home there until they came to this county. In addition to his wife, Mr. Patterson is survived by a son and daughter, Louis Patterson of Dodson and Mrs Austin White of Wellington. Other survivors are a brother and sister, Fred Patterson of Wellington and Mrs. Maude Bryant of West Plains, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Austin White Jr., and Donald Harry White of Wellington.
Funeral services were conducted at Dodson Saturday afternoon. In charge were Rev V S Wheeler, pastor, and Rev E P Aiken, Rev P R Jerrell of Electra, and Mrs. Ellis Carter of Oklahoma City. Friends gathering to pay final tribute more than filled the church.
Pall bearers were Orval Couch, Joe Wilson, Dewey Malone, E J Smith, Ellis Carter and Lee White. Honorary pall bearers were W D Franklin, E M. Trew, J A Coleman, J F Kromer, F E Sawyer, Davis Burrow, Henry Vaughn, A T Lewis, Mort Cornelius, W S White, Charley Owens, F L White, D C Camp, and Z McKinney.
Flower bearers were Laverne McWhorter, Ruby Cornelius, Billy J Owens, Benny Z. Branum, Wilma Hightower, June Carter, Mrs. Helen Ford, Patsy Lewis, Wanda Hightower, Joyce Hightower, Virginia Nell White, Inez Lewis and Mrs. Erna Faye Rollins.
Hymns were "The Bells of Heaven Ring," "When We've Gone the Last Mile," by Mr. and Mrs. Mid Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Vaughn, "Does Jesus Care" by Mr and Mrs Lewis, and "Sweet Bye and Bye."
Interment was in the Dodson cemetery with the Kelso Funeral Home in charge.
