He was born in Salvo, NC, (Cape Hatteras), August 6, 1918, son of the late Graves Midgett and Palmyra Payne Midgett. The entire Midgett family was raised in Cape Hatteras and had a love for the island and the US Coast Guard. His loving wife of fifty-five years, Eula Mae Mintz Midgett passed away in 1995.
In 1969, Melvin retired from the United States Coast Guard after 30 years of service. He had a love for the US Coast Guard that continued to highlight his life during his illness. After military service he later retired from the ABC Board. He had been a member of the East Bay Masonic Blue Lodge #264 in Michigan, the Scottish Rite Consistory of Long Island, NY, the Royal Arch, Norfolk, VA, and the Sudan Temple, New Bern, NC.
Melvin leaves behind his one and only daughter, Marilyn Nicholson Gurganus who he treasured so much and her husband Gary Travis Gurganus of Wilmington; granddaughters, Angela Nichole Nicholson and Tricia Ann Nicholson who were his pride and joy; and a sister, Mae Fulcher of Salvo, NC who he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lenwood Midgett, Vance Midgett, Oliver Midgett, Graves Midgett, Jr., and Zion Bunion Midgett, also two sisters, Ellen Farrow and Martha Ann Fountain..
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with Pastors Doug Fairfax, Robert Hankins, and Joey Canady officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens with military honors being accorded by the United States Coast Guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Gurganus, Donald Gurganus, Jerry Self, Seth Farthing, Richard Skipper, and David Barnhill.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010.
