Geo. W. Tuttle was born in Mansfield, Ohio, March 23, 1826. When yet a small boy his parents removed to Van Buren county, Iowa. In 1852, he, with a company from his neighborhood, made the overland trip to California with ox teams. On this trip they encountered considerable danger from Indians and animals and pitched their camp many times amid the great weirdness of the western valley and mountains in early days. Early in the Civil war he enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Cav. and continued with his regiment for four years. He was with General McNeal at Palmyra, Mo., when ten confederates were shot in retaliation for the murder of one union sympathizer. He always condemned this act of General McNeal as being a great human injustice. He was married to Miss Elmira Caster in 1848, at Keosauqua, Iowa, and came from there to Olathe with his family in 1872, where he has since lived. Only two of the members of his family now remain, Sherman Tuttle of Olathe, and Mrs. Krout of Kansas City.
