I. J. Young, reared in Lovelady since he was three, is a man of many natural gifts, possessing a sunny disposition, whose delight is to put people at ease. He was born in Pennington October 24, 1890. He finished at Lovelady at the time graduates were issued teacher's certificates, and taught at Volga (1909) and in Lovelady (1910-1912).
He worked in a newspaper office when very young, at the depot, and kept books for J. O. Monday before he started in his banking career with the First National Bank and later with the State National Bank for a total of 38 years.
I. J. Young is a man of lofty character, widely known and respected for his unflinching honesty and integrity. He is modest buy firm in his convictions.
1.He has been a capable religious leader, being Treasurer of his church for about 40 years, and Choir Director for almost as long. He was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the city council in recent years and was the second mayor of Lovelady following Mr. Straughan.
On June 23, 1915 Mr. Young married Ella Mainer who was born Dec. 23, 1886. She was educated in Lovelady and at Baylor University where she studied the arts and sciences and piano and voice.
After graduation there, she taught private music lessons in Lovelady, organized, accompanied, and directed a Men's Glee Club aided by Raleigh Atkinson, who taught part singing to the men. She then taught in public schools in Groveton, Henderson, and finally in Lovelady. She was recognized as an outstanding teacher, much loved by her students. When she retired, she had been High school principal for 5 years. She has been generous with her talents, and teh community has been made richer by her services in music, school, civic, church, and literary activities. She was active in Red Cross during the war, acted as secretary of P.T.A. when Mr. Tigner was president, was secretary of the cemetery association at one time, and has taught almost every age from intermediates to adult in the Sunday School for the Baptist church. She led the women of the church in their missionary work until she became ill. Even then she assisted the new elders who went to her bedside for consultation.
I. J. and Ella Young had one son, I. J. Jr., born at Lovelady June 28, 1919. He attended Baylor University and graduated with honors at TX Dental College. He served as a dentist in the Navy in World War II. On Oct 14, 1940. he united his destiny with Jeannette Walker of Trinity. He has enjoyed a successful career as dentist in Galveston. This couple has three children: Cheryl, who married William Warren both of whom graduated for T. C. U., Julia, and Ira Samuel Young.By: T.N.Mainer
