Samuel was a son of John and Elizabeth (Collins) Myers who were from "East of the Alleghenies". About 1820, the family relocated to Clarion County, PA (now Piney Twp), which was where Samuel was reared into manhood.

Samuel purchased his land from David Yuant, being 180 acres and 34 perches on May 14, 1864 for the price of $1,700. In this group of houses, Centerville emerged containing a dozen or so buildings, among them being one of the public schoolhouses in the township. This town was called Centerville because it was centrally positioned on one of the routes between Kellersburgh in Madison Township and Oakland in Mahoning Township, Armstrong Co., PA.
