Mrs. J. T. Baker Dies after Many Years Sickness
Prominent Zebulon Woman Passes after an Illness of Long Duration – Funeral Held Wednesday from Home in Zebulon.
Mrs. Mary Mitchell Baker, wife of J. T. Baker, Sr., died at her home in Zebulon, Monday night, October 9, from an acute heart attack. She was one of the most beloved women of Pike county, numbering her friends by all who knew her – gentle, friendly, and generous hearted. Her love of children was proverbial.
She was the daughter of Capt. J. H. Mitchell and Mrs. Rebecca Wells Mitchell. Her paternal grandfather was Samuel Mitchell, one of the original founders of Pike county. Her maternal grandfather was Elliott W. Wells, a noted Georgia educator.
Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Clifford Walker, of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. G. C. Burtz, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was in the family lot in East View Cemetery.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Miss Annie Mae Baker, of Zebulon; Misses Edna, Pauline, and Ruby Baker, of Atlanta, and Miss Elizabeth Baker, of Newark, N.J.; two sons, H. M. Baker, of Jacksonville and J. T. Baker, Jr., of Zebulon; three grandchildren, Edna Baker and Mitchell Baker, of Jacksonville, Fla., and John T. Baker, III, of Zebulon; three brothers, W. A. Mitchell, of Savannah; W.W. Mitchell of Zebulon, and J. H. Mitchell of Clemson College, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs. A. M. Lavender, of Cartersville, Ga., and Miss Lizzie R. Mitchell, of Zebulon.
Married to Jonathan Thomas Baker on on 23 Dec 1880 in Pike County, Georgia.
