John Thomas Baker Taken By Death Saturday Morning
Death is always sad, but when it suddenly takes a young man in the prime of life and usefulness it is inexpressibly so. Early last Saturday morning, when the news flashed from phone to phone over Zebulon that Mr. Johnny T. Baker had passed away in his sleep, the shock was felt by all and a gloom settled over the whole community, as everybody loved Johnny and claimed him as a friend. He was born on his father's farm near Zebulon in 1899; was educated at Zebulon, graduating about the time our country was entering the First World War. Shortly after graduation he volunteered as a soldier in his country's service, going in training before he was 21 in the Students Reserve Corps at Ga. Tech. When the war closed he passed successfully his examination for Rural Letter Carrier's Service and was appointed carrier for Route 1 at Zebulon, which position he held until his death. A good friend said this of him - "he loved his country and his fellow man. While becomingly modest in his efforts, he was interested in all that pertained to the betterment of his community, his church, his son's school, the Boy Scouts Organization, and is home. His funeral was held from the Zebulon Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. B. Pickern, his former pastor, Rev. Jack Bridges and his good neighbor, Rev. W.J. Culpepper. A large congregation of friends were present and the Rural Letter Carriers of the 4th District served as honorary escort. The many, many lovely floral offerings express so beautifully the esteem in which he was held by his friends. Surviving him are his wife; his two sons, John and Sammy; a brother, Harris M. Baker, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and his sisters Misses Edna, Pauline, and Ruby, of Atlanta, Elizabeth, of New Jersey N.J. and Annie May of Zebulon. Two each of these The Journal extends sincerest sympathy.
