Robert V. Kelley, 44, of 340 Fourth avenue, Waynesburg, was instantly killed when a pole on which he was working fell on top of him yesterday afternoon, crushing him to death. A linesman for the Penn Lines Company, Mr. Kelley was working near Smithton when the tragedy occurred.
Rushed to the Mercy Hospital at Pittsburgh, Mr. Kelley was dead on arrival. Death was attributed to a fractured skull.
A son of the late Kent and Luella Griffin Kelley, the deceased was born at Dillliner on Dec. 18, 1906. He spent most of his life in Greene County and was a member of the First Methodist Church and of the American Legion.
He served in the Army for 19 years. Prior to the war he was stationed on the west coast and spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone. During World War II he served 18 months in the South Pacific.
His father was former assistant and also county superintendent of schools in Greene County for many years.
Surviving are Mr. Kelley's wife, Edith Shultz Kelley, two sons, Robert Kelley, in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, Ill, and Daniel Kelley, at home, and the following brothers and sisters: Bernice, wife of James Johnston of Ninevah; Ruth, wife of Clayton Grey of Waynesbyrg, R.D. 5; Sheldon Kelley, assistant princpal at Washington High School; Lt. Kent Kelley, Jr, stationed with the Coast Guard at Boston, and Ray C. Kelley of Waynesburg.
