Joseph Mathew with his family moved from Illinois to Missouri in 1871 then to Kansas in 1877. From there they moved to Okla when the land was opened for settlement. They homesteaded on property near Dover. Later when Joseph
Matthew was 21, he homesteaded on land west of Dover when the Cheyenne and Arapaho land was opened for settlement, he filed on the land in 1897. He was married to Anna Ross on June 10, 1899. They lived on the farm until 1822 when they sold it and moved on the Thompson Farm. They lived there until 1932. Then moved into Dover living on property owned by his mother at the time of her death.
Joseph and Anna had 9 children. Four died in infancy.
